When do I use brilliant cut, and when step cut?

Written on November 5, 2009 – 10:47 am | by Bob |

Many jewelers don’t know the answer to this question. They think that if the center stone is brilliant cut or step cut then the side stones must be the same. This is not so. The same way you understand that a round stone (brilliant cut) can be set with tapered baguettes (step cut) on the side. So can you put step cut trapezoids on the side of a cushion cut. Depending on the taste and the look the customer likes.

What side diamonds do I use for a Round diamond?

Written on November 5, 2009 – 10:10 am | by Bob |

This is a common question asked when mounting a diamond ring. There is no general answer, since there are so many exotic diamond shapes that are being cut these days. Its entirely up to you what look you want.

However when mounting up a round diamond many people choose either Halfmoons, Trapezoids,  (step cut or brilliant cut) or shields.
